- Prepare 2 of medium size bitter melon.
- Prepare 2 of onions, chopped.
- You need 5-6 of garlic cloves.
- You need 1 sprig of curry leaves.
- Prepare 2 tbsp. of oil.
- You need 1 tsp. of mustard seeds.
- It's 1 tsp. of urad dal (split black gram).
- It's 1 tbsp. of chana dal (Bengal gram).
- Prepare 1/4 tsp. of asafoetida.
- Prepare to taste of salt.
- Prepare 1/2 tsp. of turmeric powder.
- Prepare 1 tbsp. of red chili powder.
- It's 1 tbsp. of sugar.
Kakarakaya Vepudu instructions
- Scrape bitter melon & slice finely. Add a tsp. of salt & keep aside for an hour. Wash well. Drain and keep aside..
- Heat oil & temper with mustard seeds. Then add urad dal, chana dal and asafoetida. Saute till the dal changes colour..
- Add onion, garlic & curry leaves. Saute till light brown..
- Add bitter melon, salt & turmeric powder. Cover & fry on a med. flame till soft..
- Then add red chili powder. Give it a stir..
- Add sugar and continue to fry further for a minute more..
- Serve with hot steamed rice and with some ghee drizzled over it..
